Its not often I read an ASH press release and hurt myself laughing, but this one was funny.
The winner of the "Stupid Business Decisions Award" goes to Marriott, who, you may recall, announced a smoker ban in all of their North American hotels. One year on, and there is a massive hole in their profits. They made a poor business decision, all on their own, but smokers, God bless 'em, made their own decision as well. They decided not to use Marriott Hotels for their vacations and their business trips. Result? Financial loss for Marriott, financial gain for hotels who welcome smokers, and smokers get to exercise their freedom to choose.
The winner of the "Whiners Of The Month Award" goes to ASH. They got their knickers in a twist when Marriott reneged on their "promise" to go smoke free. Again, this is a legitimate business decision and we applaud them for taking this brave step.
Being politically correct when it doesnt affect your bottom line is nice. But once you upset the shareholders, who quite rightly couldnt give a rats ass whether people smoke in Marriott Hotels or not, is a different kettle of fish.
Businesses are slowly learning that we smokers, and our tolerant friends, vote with our wallets and we will always find an alternative venue in which to spend our money.
Exclude smokers at your peril. By simply staying away, we can cripple your businesses. And we will do so, until you learn the lesson.
Oh, and by the way, we vote too. Politicians: beware!
