Edinbugh hosts an international conference early in September that will cover the future agenda of tobacco control, 'the first comprehensive and innovative evaluation from Scotland' and 'international discussions about effective implementation of comprehensive smoke-free legislation'. The conference is entitled Towards a Smokefree Society.
It is interesting that the correspondence from the First Minister's Office indicated that there were no immediate plans for a post-legislative review of the smoking ban in Scotland at the present time. Such a review should include the views of petitioners, such as Freedom to Choose and the Smoking Action Group in Fife, and yet according to the conference programme 'comprehensive and innovative evaluation' has already taken place. Once again the anti-smoking specialists are pulling the Scottish Executive in its wake.
